Norovirus caught on Cruise Ships

Cruise Ship Outbreaks

Norovirus caught on Cruise ShipsHoliday cruises are considered one of life’s luxuries, so when stepping onboard, you want to make sure the entire trip is smooth and spectacular. Unfortunately, outbreaks of a bug called the ‘Norovirus’ have been reported recently on some ships.

The virus is passed from human to human, so a single, infected person boarding the ship can cause a mass contamination. The enclosed living space, no matter how vast the ship may be, causes the spread of the bug to happen more rapidly, resulting in a large amount of persons on board falling ill.

The virus can  be contracted from touching a surface where an infected person may touched previously where they could have left a trace of human faecesfrom inadequate hand washing and / or touching a contaminated ‘touchpoint’ like a toilet door handle. It is very difficult to prevent contamination as the virus thrives on such surfaces up to 2 weeks after initial contact.

Where studies have shown that 90% of people fail to wash their hands correctly, preventing unwanted and unnecessary outbreaks may seem impossible to maintain. However, by implementing StepNpull unto the doors of the cruise ship, you can reduce physical contact with the bug massively, resulting in a safer environment for all on board.

Yukky germs and bacteria

Yukky Germs – What you can’t see

Yukky germs and bacteriaA recent study discovered that the humble sink topped other items in the toilet, as being the most bacterial infested;having over 1,000 colony forming units (CFUs). CFUs are an estimate of varying bacteria or fungus. It is used as a measuring tool to roughly understand the sum of different bugs found in 1 area.

Miraculously, bugs were located almost everywhere in the bathroom, aside from the soap dispenser.

Germs are mostly spread by the touching of infected surfaces and can break out up to 6 times further than they were originally located, and when, within 24 hours, 8 million cells are formed, it can be almost impossible not to pick up some of the bugs.

The soap dispenser may be antibacterial and therefore a beneficial clean after a visit to the loo, but studies found that we are still not washing our hands satisfactorily, resulting in the disposal of non-rinsed germs on door handles.

Protect yourself and others around you from harmful bugs by removing hand contact completely and installing a StepNpull onto the door: resulting in a smooth exit, totally germ free.

Injured workman

Workplace injuries – Handle with care

injured Man on crutches Health and Safety Executive researched injuries made in the workplace. According to the list of reported incidents and accidents causing employees to take time off work, ‘handling’ was the most reoccurring.

‘Handling’ refers to a list of ways a person may gain injury: including strains, sprains, lifting, carrying, pushing of pulling loads, trapped fingers and cuts from sharp objects.

In total there were 30,663 reported employee handling injuries. Over 90% of these reported injuries resulted in more than 3 days off work and over 800 injuries were obtained by members of the public. As a result, approximately 1.2 million working days were lost due to handling injuries, averaging out, per injury, 8.8 days off work!

Manual handling made up more than a third of the handling injuries, the main injury being of the back.  And as lifting or putting down loads was the most common kind of an injury, spurning over 3 days off work, this is clearly an area that needs attention.

StepNpull offers an alternative to unnecessary strains on the body. Because you do not need your hands to open a door, you can remain bent-back-free, safely relocating your items. Noticeably reduce the risk with our products.

Children Washing Hands

For the children of the future, adults act now

Kids washing handsOn the 15th of October Global Handwashing Day was launched, supported by the United Nations. It was aimed at young children to learn of the true impacts hygiene has on our world. It’s message: ‘simply wet, lather and rinse’. Perhaps in future years they will add ‘avoid contaminated touchpoints’ to emphasise the need to accept the fact that we now have a choice about opening communal doors.

Children from all over the world struggle against the poverty line, failing to uphold personal hygiene. The day recognised that by implementing soap and water, to those in need, we can save up to 1400 infants (under 5 years of age) every day.

Illness is spread globally, not just far from home. Like a chain reaction, one illness contracted on home soil could easily travel from carrier to carrier until reaching countries that do not have the tools to prevent contamination.

Washing our hands appropriately dramatically reduces the risk of widespread contagion and helps save the children of tomorrow. To compliment a thorough wash, always choose StepNpull as the last thing you do to prevent bacterial spreads.
